playing US games on a UK PS2?

I was wondering if anyone could help me. I was recently sent a US ps2 game but it won't play on my ps2 here in England. I was hoping that there might be something I could do to make it work. I've been searching the net for a while now, but I don't really understand some of the info I have found.
